TPU Printing: Hardness, Feed Path, and First-Print Checks

TPU is one part of the flexible-filament family. Hardness, formulation, and printer path matter, so begin with the exact spool and printer documentation rather than a universal TPU recipe.

Start with the application and hardness

Prusa documents spacing washers, protective sleeves, stamps, tires, shoe soles, and belts as flexible-filament examples. These are examples, not performance guarantees. Softer is not automatically better: Prusa notes that softer flexible filament is generally harder to print. Do not assume an unlabeled TPU spool is 95A or transfer settings between hardness grades.

Use the TPU material profile to confirm the family-level applications and limits, then check the actual product label.

Prepare the material, printer, and plate

  1. Select a printer-supported profile for the exact product or closest documented hardness.
  2. Keep the filament path controlled and use only the idler adjustment documented for the printer.
  3. Use the plate maker's TPU compatibility guidance. Some flexible materials can over-adhere and need a textured sheet or separation layer.
  4. Treat moisture as a product-specific check. Use the drying workflow only within the spool and dryer limits.
  5. Start slowly within the supported profile, then change one setting at a time.

For the documented Prusa example, see the Prusa MK4 profile. For symptoms after the feed path is stable, use the stringing workflow and settings directory.

Stop and re-check when

  • filament buckles or tangles at the drive gears;
  • extrusion becomes inconsistent after storage in humid conditions;
  • the part bonds so strongly that sheet damage is possible; or
  • a generic profile conflicts with the filament maker's range.

This page does not claim first-party testing or rank TPU brands. It converts the retained draft into a bounded decision path supported by manufacturer guidance.
